Youth United for Community Action (YUCA) is hiring a 40–hour staff person to coordination the Higher Learning project in East Palo Alto. Led and run by young people of color, YUCA seeks to provide a vehicle for youth to empower themselves and develop productive life skills through community organizing and leadership development. Higher Learning, YUCA’s high school organizing program, is an intense program combining leadership development with community organizing that targets high school aged youth of color in the East Palo Alto area.

Position: Social Justice Program Director
The Social Justice Program Director is responsible for co-coordinating major areas of the Higher Learning program:
75% Program work: Supervise high school aged youth in organizing campaigns and education projects in the community; Mentor high school youth; Work with youth to develop their skills in computer, facilitation, public speaking, outreach, project planning, etc; Work with other staff to create leadership development curriculum for high school youth; Coordinate with other Higher Learning staff to design, implement, and evaluate Higher Learning activities (which includes weekly check-ins and quarterly staff retreats); Coordinate evaluation activities for Higher Learning (which includes quarterly individual evaluations, quarterly group evaluations, and bi-annual overnight retreats); Advise youth in project planning, implementation, and evaluation; Work with other staff to coordinate all other YUCA activities; Be a resource to the youth and their projects.
10% Staff Management Coordinate and supervise one Higher Learning Assistant Coordinator to implement the program i.e. staff development, discipline, conduct work performance evaluations, communication, and weekly checkins
5% Fundraising: Identify and implement fundraising strategies for Higher Learning program (which includes grant-writing and grassroots fundraising).
5% Liaison: Be a liaison to parents, guardians, and other family members concerning Higher Learning/ YUCA events; Represent YUCA and Higher Learning to funders, news media, etc; Outreach to other community based networks working on similar issues.
5% Administration: Coordinate all necessary paperwork for youth to fully participate in Higher Learning (youth paper work, processing stipends etc.).
· Experience supervising, working with and mentoring high school youth a must
· Computer skill a must
· Community work/involvement a must
· Community organizing experience is highly desired
· Familiarity with issues facing youth in East Palo Alto or other similar communities preferred
· Fluency in Spanish, Samoan, or Tongan a plus
· Driver’s license a must
· Car is preferred
· Ability to work and deal with diverse environments, work under pressure, multitask, be self-disciplined, work as a team player a must
· Have a sense of humor and a lot of patience
· Willing to challenge self to meet these desired qualifications
· Willing and able to make a two year commitment
Offered Salary is between $39,000-$42,000/yr depending on experience. Benefits include Vision, Dental and Medical. A short term probationary period will be implemented before Benefits are disbursed.
